Baseline Road between 1st Avenue West and 1st Avenue East is closed as Buckeye police investigate a vehicle theft that led to a crash and an assault on two officers.
The incident began shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday when Buckeye police received a report of a stolen City of Buckeye truck from a job site near Baseline Road and Central Boulevard. Authorities said an adult male suspect stole the vehicle while city crews were working in the area.
The suspect crashed the stolen truck into an unoccupied vehicle about a block away. He then attempted to flee on foot but was detained by a city employee before officers arrived, police said.
As officers took the suspect into custody, police said he assaulted two officers. Both officers sustained minor injuries, and one was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police have not released the suspect’s name or indicated what charges he may face. Baseline Road remains closed while investigators process the scene.
The Buckeye Police Department commended the city employee for assisting in detaining the suspect, helping prevent further incidents.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes until the roadway reopens.
