The Buckeye City Council will consider expanding its partnership with AXON Enterprise, Inc. during tonight's meeting, Dec. 17. If approved, the amendment would boost the city’s investment in body cameras, Tasers, and software solutions for its police department, aiming to improve safety, officer training, and operational efficiency.
The proposed update would increase the contract's cap from $1.13 million to $1.52 million — an additional $380,000. These funds would cover new equipment, upgraded software subscriptions, and enhanced training tools, including advanced body cameras and Tasers for Buckeye police officers.
Police Chief Robert Sanders underscored the importance of these tools, describing AXON’s technology as critical for both public safety and officer accountability.
“AXON’s technology enhances the department’s ability to perform its job safely, efficiently, and within the requirements of the law,” Sanders wrote in the agenda summary.
The updated agreement ensures officers have access to the latest body-worn cameras, complete with video redaction tools and cloud-based evidence management systems. The deal also includes new Tasers — non-lethal devices used to de-escalate situations — and virtual reality training programs focused on crisis intervention and situational awareness.
The expanded services will support Buckeye’s growing police force, particularly the newly approved officer positions for Fiscal Year 2025. By upgrading equipment and integrating AXON’s systems, the department aims to meet increasing community needs while enhancing transparency and performance.
Key updates include automatic activation of body cameras when Tasers are deployed, software enhancements, and regular equipment maintenance. The anticipated cost for the current fiscal year is $435,000, and the city has already budgeted for these expenses in Fiscal Year 2025.
Buckeye has relied on AXON products for years after a competitive selection process, and the company — based in Scottsdale— is well-known for its innovative law enforcement technology.
The council will discuss and vote on the amendment during tonight's regular meeting at Buckeye City Hall. If approved, the city manager will finalize and sign the updated agreement.
