Sundance Park named Facility of the Year

Buckeye’s Sundance Park was named Facility of the Year for phase two of its development at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association’s 2024 Conference in Tucson from Aug. 26 to 28.

City Manager Daniel Cotterman made the announcement at the regular city council meeting on Tuesday.

“It’s just a huge shoutout to the team who was part of that project,” he said.

Phase two of the Sundance Park project was completed in September 2023, according to the city’s website, and included a 38-acre expansion with a three-acre fishing lake, grand pavilion, splash pad, lighted basketball courts, multi-use sports fields and the installation of new playgrounds, ramadas and restrooms. It also features a dog park, volleyball courts, charcoal grills available to rent and the Fitness in the Park program.

Other Business

The full Sept. 3 city council meeting lasted five minutes in total — shorter even than the 12-minute meeting two weeks ago. District 1 Councilmember Tony Youngker was absent.

The council approved several consent agenda items in a single unanimous vote including the following:

  • Submitted a $670,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Post-Fire Grant application. The grant, offered through the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, will fund the removal of fire fuel materials in an effort to reduce the risk of wildfires in the White Tank Mountain Range along the community of Verrado. The grant would provide three years of funding for the mitigation project.
  • Took action on a memorandum of understanding with DMB White Tank LLC to allocate property near Verrado High School for the proposed future site of a new fire station. The Victory Fire Station #708 would sit on 1.5 acres of land to the west of the school and north of Indian School Rd.

Mayor Eric Orsborn briefly discussed the city’s recent attendance at the Arizona League of Cities and Towns conference from August 27-30 at the Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to learn lessons from other cities—both good and bad,” he said, “It’s an outstanding opportunity for mayors and councilmembers from across the state.”
