Governor’s State of the State speech highlights impact on Buckeye

In her State of the State address Monday Jan. 13, Gov. Katie Hobbs outlined policies poised to shape Arizona’s future, with key implications for the rapidly growing city of Buckeye. Addressing housing, water, infrastructure, and economic growth, Hobbs emphasized bipartisan solutions to ensure sustainable development and opportunity across the state.

Housing affordability

Gov. Hobbs pledged to expand affordable housing initiatives, doubling the capacity of the "Arizona Is Home" program, which helps first-time homebuyers with down payment assistance. She also proposed extending the State Low-Income Housing Tax Credit and tightening regulations on short-term rental properties. These measures aim to alleviate Buckeye's housing challenges as the city grapples with skyrocketing demand and limited inventory.

Water security

Buckeye’s growth depends on reliable water access, and Hobbs reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding Arizona’s groundwater and securing Colorado River allocations. She highlighted new programs encouraging sustainable water use and announced progress on alternative water supply initiatives, which could benefit Buckeye’s agricultural and residential sectors.

Economic growth and jobs

The governor’s focus on workforce development, particularly through the BuildItAZ initiative, promises expanded opportunities in trades and apprenticeships. With Buckeye’s proximity to growing industries like manufacturing and technology, these programs could enhance local job creation and economic stability.

Infrastructure

Hobbs urged lawmakers to prioritize investments in infrastructure to support cities experiencing rapid growth, like Buckeye. Enhanced funding for transportation and utilities could alleviate strains caused by the city’s population boom.

As Buckeye continues its rapid ascent, local leaders will watch closely as the governor’s proposals take shape during the legislative session.
