Council holds annexation hearing, postpones downtown rezoning hearing

The Buckeye City Council held the first of two public hearings on Nov. 18 for a small land annexation along Tuthill Road. At its regular meeting, the Council also postponed another public hearing on a renovation to allow a downtown child care center.

There were no comments on the annexation of about 1.86 acres at the southeast corner of Tuthill. and Yuma roads, which would potentially bring two parcels into the Mountain View South residential development, owned by Mountain Views South LLC.

It was the first of two public hearings for the annexation, which “will allow for the future dedication and improvement of right-of-way, which will be necessary for development of the adjacent Mountain View South property," according to the city document.

The thin strip of land is zoned Rural-43 (RU-43) by the county and would be designated as Single Family Residential 43 (R1-43) by the City of Buckeye, if annexed. No further rezoning needs are anticipated, said principal planner Mandy Woods at the meeting.

The second hearing and potential approval motion by the council is scheduled for the Dec. 16 meeting.

Downtown Rezoning Postponement

The City Council approved a request to postpone a downtown rezoning public hearing to its Dec. 16 meeting. The hearing will allow residents, stakeholders and other interested parties to share their thoughts about rezoning .75 acres at the southeast corner of South 5th Street. and East Mahoney Avenue downtown. If approved following the required public hearings, the land would be rezoned from Planned Residential (PR) to Downtown Residential (DR). This would allow the owners to renovate the existing structure into a childcare facility, according to the city document.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will also conduct a public hearing at its regular Nov. 25 meeting and issue a recommendation of further action to Council.
