The City of Buckeye's grant team has been busy, with a total of more than $4.8 million between six grants approved for submission on Oct. 21 by city council.
District 6 Councilmember Clay Goodman thanked Grant Program Manager Rob Roach and his team at the meeting: "He's got a pretty good batting average with bringing some of that stuff back into Buckeye. ... If we're successful in all of these, it's $4.8 million that doesn't come out of our taxpayers' pockets."
Amount: $495,000, with no local match
Grantor: U.S. Department of Transportation, Office of the Secretary of Transportation, Build America Bureau
Proposed use: Creating a design concept report for the Sun Valley Parkway Corridor and I-10 interchange.
Safer Outcomes: Enhancing De-Escalation and Crisis Response Training for Law Enforcement Grant
Amount: $269,166, with no local match
Grantor: Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services
Proposed use: Purchasing a new virtual reality system for the Buckeye Police Department, which includes training options for use-of-force tools such as pepper spray and handguns, and to fund a crisis-focused trainer position.
Phoenix Urban Area Security Initiative Grant
Amount: $525,000, with no local match
Grantor: Arizona Department of Homeland Security
Proposed use: Purchasing seven unmanned aerial vehicle systems for the Buckeye Fire-Medical-Rescue Department to aid in responding to and preventing emergency events.

Proposed use: Purchasing a new hazardous materials truck for the Buckeye Fire-Medical-Rescue Department.

Proposed use: Purchasing 100 new radios for the Buckeye Fire-Medical-Rescue Department to be in compliance with the National Fire Protection Association. The current radios are 13 years old.

Proposed use: Purchasing a new street sweeper.
