Arizona Highway Patrol troopers stepped in to assist a stranded elderly woman at a rest area off Interstate 10 near Buckeye last week after finding her disoriented, out of resources and in need of immediate help.
The woman, a diabetic who had been attempting to drive from California to Florida, became stranded at the Tonopah rest area with no way to pay for towing or repairs. She told troopers she was unsure where she was and had little access to food or water.
During the welfare check, she made suicidal statements, prompting troopers to stay on scene and ensure her safety. They coordinated with Solari Crisis Services, which provided immediate mental health support along with shelter, food and transportation.
Troopers also contacted a family friend in Florida to let them know she was safe and receiving assistance.
Authorities said the incident is a reminder that not every emergency on the highway involves a crash or a crime. Sometimes, a disabled vehicle or erratic driving is a sign someone needs help. They encourage drivers to call 911 if they see a stalled vehicle or concerning behavior so responders can check on the person and provide resources.
