Three people were taken to a hospital Friday after a hazardous chemical spilled inside a Buckeye medical clinic, according to Ryan Gray, assistant fire chief for the city of Buckeye.
Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue Department crews and automatic aid partners responded to the clinic at 20640 W. Roosevelt St. at about 10 a.m.
Gray said about 1 liter of phenol spilled inside the building. Phenol is toxic and flammable.
Firefighters isolated the area and established a hazardous materials response group. Specially trained technicians entered the clinic to identify the chemical, evaluate conditions, and contain the spill.
Buckeye Fire paramedics evaluated four people. Crews transported three patients to a local hospital in stable condition. One person declined transportation after being evaluated.
The spill remained inside the clinic. Officials did not close any roads, but emergency crews temporarily restricted access to the east parking lot.
Crews stabilized the scene and turned it over to Buckeye Fire Prevention, the responsible party, and a licensed hazardous materials cleanup contractor.
All emergency units later cleared the scene and returned to service.
