Buckeye athletes no longer have to leave the city to buy sports gear and apparel.
Dick's Sporting Goods debuted its new Buckeye Commons store on Friday. The grand opening ceremony included a ribbon-cutting, giveaways, and a line of Youngker High School cheerleaders welcoming customers.
The store sits near 18 Buckeye schools, making it a convenient option for student-athletes like Nevaeh Jones. Jones is a high school volleyball player who attended the grand opening with her mom, Amanda Jones. The Watson Estates resident previously drove a 40-mile round trip for equipment.
"We've been going to the [Dick's Sporting Goods] in Surprise because it's the closest store with the equipment [Nevaeh] needs for volleyball," Jones told InBuckeye. "This store is literally right down the road. It's a relief."
The 50,000-square-foot store employs 117 people and is the newest Buckeye Commons store opening. This is the Costco-anchored shopping center at the southeast corner of Interstate 10 and Verrado Way.
"Our store is an elevated version of the typical 50,000-square-foot Dick’s stores," said Stephanie Armstrong, a field marketing manager for Dick’s Sporting Goods.
That includes store features the "House of Cleats," an area dedicated to more than 400 cleats across multiple sports, as well as an expanded footwear selection and golf simulator.
Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride will make an appearance 4 p.m. Sunday for an autograph signing. 250 wristbands are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 10 a.m.
