IONNA, an electric vehicle charging partnership founded by BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis and Toyota, submitted an initial development application to the city of Buckeye, according to records obtained by InBuckeye.
The startup network launched an aggressive national release in February, with the goal of deploying over 1,000 live charging bays and enabling EV road trips across the U.S. by the end of 2025.
IONNA, which aims to build a charge network to rival Tesla, plans to deploy more than 30,000 fast-charging ports within the next five years, according to its website. Earlier this year, IONNA rolled out its first and currently only Arizona rechargery in Wilcox, approximately 230 miles west of Buckeye on Interstate 10.
Maricopa County currently has no IONNA-branded locations.
Recharging stations are equipped with snacks, restrooms and complimentary Wi-Fi for customers, according to IONNA's website.
Justin Nickel, a project manager for Kimley-Horn, a planning firm, submitted the business application.
“The proposed EV charging station will consist of five DC fast charging units. Each unit will be equipped with dual ports and a lit overhead canopy,” Nickle wrote. “The charging station is intended to serve residents, commuters, and visitors to the Sundance Towne Center, promoting the use of electric vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
If approved, IONNA’s 3,600-square-foot site will be located at the Sundance Town Center Parking, near Walmart at 850 S. Watson Road.

There ARE already chargers there at that location..to say “first EV chargers” would therefore be a bit inaccurate..
