Family says Buckeye mother died saving her child

A Buckeye woman who was struck and killed outside Walmart last week is being remembered as a devoted mother who gave her life to protect her child.

Verrado Heritage District resident Michelle Marie Perez, 41, was hit by an SUV on Thursday while heading into Walmart to grocery shop with her mother and 4-year-old daughter, according to her family. Relatives said Perez pushed her daughter out of harm’s way just before she was struck.

“She lived her whole life for her kids, and in her last moments, she gave her life to save her youngest daughter,” the family wrote in a statement. “She was only 41 years old, leaving behind her husband, Ivan, to care for their five children.”

The family has created a fundraiser to help with final arrangement expenses and provide ongoing support for Perez’s husband and children as they adjust to the loss.

“We appreciate any and all donations as we know these are hard times for everyone right now,” the family said. “Thank you all for your generosity, prayers and love.”
