The 17-year-old wounded in last week’s Sienna Hills shooting now faces paralysis from the waist down, according to her family.
Emani was shot in the back Aug. 27 at a home near Sienna Hills Parkway and McDowell Road. Her father, 36-year-old David Washington, died at the scene. Police initially described Emani’s injuries as non-life-threatening. However, her aunt said the family has since learned the injuries will have devastating consequences. “Although Emani survived the shooting, her life has been profoundly changed,” Marie Washington said in a statement to InBuckeye. Emani became a mother only a few months ago. Now, she must begin rehabilitation while grieving her father and caring for her baby. Meanwhile, the family is also supporting David’s other children as they adjust to life without him. “David was a father who leaves behind children who loved and depended on him,” Marie said.
Family launches fundraiser
The family established a GoFundMe campaign to help manage the financial burden created by the shooting. As of Sept. 1, the campaign had raised $5,505 from 27 donations toward its $16,000 goal. Donations will assist with David’s funeral and burial expenses. The fundraiser will also support Emani’s rehabilitation, mobility, transportation, and accessibility needs. In addition, the family hopes to provide continued stability for David’s children. “No amount of money can bring David back or undo what happened,” the fundraiser states. “But financial support can provide some stability for the children David leaves behind.”
Shooting suspect faces murder charge
Buckeye police responded shortly before 1 a.m. Aug. 27 after receiving reports of gunfire. A uniformed police sergeant who was driving nearby responded and detained the suspect within minutes.
Authorities accuse 22-year-old Jesus Adrian Lastra-Perez of second-degree murder and aggravated assault, among other felony charges. Court records listed a $1 million bond. Lastra-Perez has not been convicted. InBuckeye previously reported additional information about the shooting, charges, and court proceedings.
The family asked residents who cannot donate to consider sharing the fundraiser.

This family went into David’s house and provoked and taunted David’s current wife’s kids this is not only David’s home it was Jesus and Jessica home they built as as a family. Im sure that shellsee lady didn’t say that nor how she had her 17 yr old that got shot.beat up Jesus’s sister along with the other kids of hers taking turns beating her up . And several calls has been made to the buckeye police prior to this incident sadly.. yes david passed away who jesus loved dearly for 9 years And I know as a fact he is remorseful for his actions. But again he was defending his sister and himself. This is very upsetting how the police and press is not considering this original people Jessica and her kids that lived there… there side of the whole situation and there trama .. the girls are devastated and cant sleep having nightmares. Also worried about there brother in jail and there smaller brothers that are with people they dont even know . Those kids belong to there sister’s who love them and have been caring and been with them their whole lives . Please give those kids back to their sister’s that shellsee lady just went to that house to take over that something she didn’t work for .. and also david is still married to Jessica
