Buckeye lawmaker’s bill requiring age checks on porn sites takes effect Friday

Arizona residents will soon face new restrictions when visiting adult websites. A law spearheaded by a West Valley legislator and signed earlier this year by Gov. Katie Hobbs goes into effect Friday, forcing pornography providers to verify users’ ages or risk losing access in the state.

House Bill 2112 requires commercial adult platforms to implement age-verification systems, such as scanning a government-issued ID, to prevent minors from viewing explicit material. If sites fail to comply, they could face penalties of up to $250,000 and expose themselves to lawsuits from parents whose children bypass weak safeguards.

The measure, introduced by Rep. Nick Kupper, R-Surprise, places responsibility on content providers rather than families. It also directs companies not to retain or share identifying information collected during the verification process.

“There’s no excuse for letting kids have unlimited access to hardcore pornography,” Kupper said, in a press release. “HB2112 puts the responsibility where it belongs—on the companies making money off this material. If they refuse to protect children, they can be held accountable. It’s that simple.”

Backers argue the law protects children while balancing privacy concerns, noting that more than a dozen states have adopted similar requirements. The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to block a comparable statute in Texas, signaling states may have wider latitude to impose restrictions on access to adult content.

Arizona is among the first Western states to enact such legislation. Industry leaders now face a choice: adapt to the state’s verification mandate or block Arizona users altogether.
