American Legion Post 53 holds annual retirement ceremony in Buckeye

American Legion Post 53 marked its 11th annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on June 14 at the Buckeye Community Veterans Service Center, continuing a tradition that has steadily grown since its inception in 2015.

What began as a small collaboration with a single Boy Scout troop has since blossomed into a meaningful community event. That first ceremony involved just Troop 263 assisting veterans in retiring American flags with dignity. Over the past decade, the effort has expanded significantly thanks to multiple Eagle Scout projects that have helped construct and enhance the designated flag retirement area at the center.

This year’s event featured support from the Tonopah Valley High School Civil Air Patrol, who assisted with the ceremonial aspects of the retirement process. The event also brought together local organizations and youth volunteers, highlighting the community’s ongoing dedication to honoring the flag and supporting veterans.

The annual ceremony is just one part of the broader work done by the Post 53 Family, a group composed entirely of volunteers. The organization includes three key branches:

  • Post 53, for military veterans;

  • Unit 53 Auxiliary, made up of family members of veterans; and

  • Post 53 Riders, a motorcycle group made up of Post and Auxiliary members, which is currently restarting operations.

Throughout the year, the Post 53 Family maintains an active calendar of events and programs aimed at supporting veterans, military families, youth development and the broader Buckeye community. The organization also frequently partners with other local groups and takes part in city events to build stronger community ties.

While the summer months are a quieter period for planning, Post 53 events will resume in mid-September and continue through June. In the meantime, American Legion Baseball games are being played throughout June. Those interested in learning more about upcoming activities or getting involved can visit Post 53 at 402 E. To stay connected, residents are encouraged to follow Post 53 on social media or visit the Buckeye Community Veterans Service Center.
