Airgas considers ammonia facility in Buckeye to fuel semiconductor growth

UPDATE: Airgas Specialty Products contacted InBuckeye on June 27 and informed us they have decided not to advance the project.

Airgas Specialty Products (ASP) plans to construct a high-purity ammonia production and chemical distribution facility on a 6.33-acre undeveloped site in Buckeye to support growing tech demand, according to initial development application records obtained by InBuckeye.

According to the application, the location on the southwest corner of Rainbow Road and Southern Avenue, would aim to support the rapidly growing tech and semiconductor industries. ASP’s facility will specialize in the storage and processing of commercial and premium-grade anhydrous ammonia and the production and storage of ammonium hydroxide.

A distillation system will upgrade commercial-grade to premium-grade ammonia, also known as electronic-grade ammonia, according to the application.

Electronic-grade ammonia is essential for advanced electronics manufacturing. It plays a critical role in processes like chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and etching, which create thin films and micro-patterns on silicon wafers for semiconductors, LEDs, and LCD displays, according to tech research.

“This project would benefit the expanding electronics industry in the state of Arizona by providing more affordable, easier access to the raw materials needed for production,” wrote the applicant.

The facility will be built on approximately 2.5 acres leased from Buckeye 54 LLC along the property's southern edge. According to the application, development plans are underway, though the parcel is not yet subdivided.

Daily trucking operations will be able to support the delivery and distribution of materials, according to the application. Supporting infrastructure includes a 4,000 sq ft building with potential for future rail access and transloading.
