A 9-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after a near-drowning incident Sunday afternoon in the Sundance Park community, officials said.

Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue said crews responded to a home where the child was found face down and unconscious in a residential pool during a family gathering. Officials believe about one minute had passed since the boy was last seen in the water.

Care was initiated immediately and 911 was called, according to fire officials. The child was transported to Phoenix Children’s Hospital – Avondale Campus. He was breathing but required advanced medical care at the time of transport.

The circumstances leading to the incident remain under investigation.

Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue extended its thoughts to the family and issued a reminder about water safety.

Water Safety Reminder:

  • Always designate a “Water Watcher” when children are swimming.
  • Keep pool gates closed and locked when not in use.
  • Ensure children know how to swim and wear life jackets if needed.
  • Never rely on flotation devices as a substitute for supervision.
  • If a child goes missing, check the water first.

“Together, we can help prevent tragedies and keep our community safe,” the department said in a statement.
