For the first time ever, all three Buckeye Union High School District campuses received an A from the Arizona Department of Education for the 2023-2024 school year.
This is the second consecutive year in which Estrella Foothills and Younger High School have received an A rating and Buckeye Union High School's first year. The BUHSD serves approximately 5,700 students grades 9-12 in Buckeye and Goodyear. Arizona schools are evaluated annually on the A-F Letter Grade Accountability System. Each school is graded across indicators including academic growth, English language proficiency, readiness for high school and higher education, career preparedness and graduation rates.
"Arizona’s Accountability System, developed with input from educators, parents, data experts and community members, is designed to provide a balanced and comprehensive assessment of a school’s quality and effectiveness," reads a press release from BUHSD. "The A Rating reflects the effectiveness of BUHSD’s programs, dedication to fostering student growth and commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school."
When Dr. Steve Bebee assumed his role as district superintendent four years ago, he said one of his goals was to make BUHSD an A-rated district. Achieving that goal in just four years took team effort from everyone: Teachers, staff and students alike.
"I think it's a testament to the students in our district because it ultimately comes down to them," he said. "Kudos to them for demonstrating the knowledge and ability that they have as individuals."
Contributing to the rating, Bebee identified giving teachers designated time ach week to talk about assessments and prepare for the week. He also cited the district's literacy initiative as being an important contributor.
BUHSD is a Title I district, receiving federal funding to improve academic standards, according to the Arizona Department of Education. Schools eligible for Title I designation must have at least 40% of its student population coming from low-income households.
With that designation can come unfair stereotypes and stigmas, Bebee said. He hopes the A Rating will work to change the narrative.
"So many times, especially in a Title I school, you get a bad reputation that kids aren't capable," he said. "And I think this is a testament that every kid in Buckeye Union High School can achieve to the level that they choose to achieve. They have the opportunity for them and the sky is the limit for where they want it to take them."
