Prefabricated apartment developer eyes Buckeye Commons area

Chandler-based Z Modular recently submitted an initial application to the city of Buckeye for a 448-unit apartment development at the southwest corner of Fillmore Street and Verrado Way.

Z Modular utilizes prefabricated, modular construction, where units are manufactured in Chandler and transported to sites for assembly. The method reduces construction time and minimizes disruption for nearby residents, according to Z Modular's website.

The developer's targeted site is approximately 14 acres of vacant, according to city records.

The proposed development, Sharon Buckeye, will consist of 615,000 square feet of construction across seven residential, multi-family housing buildings. The apartment complex would include 140 one-bedroom units, 252 two-bedroom units, and 56 three-bedroom units.

According to the business pre-application, the five-story apartment buildings will be constructed modularly, significantly reducing waste and negative environmental impacts on the surrounding community. The proposed apartment complex's life-cycle sustainability would be maintained by equipping units with smart technology, energy—and water-saving fixtures, and a highly insulated exterior envelope made possible by modular construction.

  1. Do we really need 448 units there? Do we as neighbors get to vote? This will be a complete eyesore and cause issues. I moved to Buckeye because of the single family homes! I moved to get away from the problems that apartments bring! The city seems to think that apartments are affordable. They are not. It causes more people to live in one unit which tends to bring in lower incomes and more people living in the units it is intended for. Wouldn’t the city make more money on taxing single family dwellings? As more shops and shopping comes to Buckeye, we as residents will spend more money IN Buckeye without driving to nearby cities. We as residents do not need apartments. We as residents and homeowners want to spend money in our own city. We do not want to feel crowded out and want our voices to be heard!

    1. 100% agree with you. Most people moved out here to get away from that. Do we not get a say in anything? By the time we hear about anything Buckeye mayor & council have already back footed this overbuilding in. That area is already a traffic nightmare.

  2. Hi Cindy – I have reached out to the Mayor and city council. There will also be a meeting on July 9th regarding the decisions made for “The Landing”. I plan on attending that meeting too.
