A driver is facing criminal charges after a state trooper clocked a vehicle traveling more than 100 miles per hour on Interstate 10 near the State Route 85 interchange on April 21.
According to a social media post from the Arizona Highway Patrol, a trooper was entering I-10 when a black Ford Mustang sped past at a high rate of speed. The trooper began tracking the vehicle and captured the incident on dash camera as the driver made multiple unsafe lane changes.
Authorities say the Mustang reached speeds of up to 102 miles per hour in a posted 65 mph zone while weaving through traffic. During the pursuit, the vehicle reportedly passed several other motorists, including two fire trucks, a street sweeper and an ambulance.
After initiating a traffic stop, the trooper questioned the driver, who reportedly said he was traveling from California to visit his mother and admitted he had “no reason” for driving at such speeds.
The driver was cited and charged with criminal speed and reckless driving. His vehicle was impounded for 20 days, according to the report.
Officials are reminding drivers to obey posted speed limits and drive safely, particularly on heavily traveled corridors like I-10.
