Driver arrested in crash that injured pedestrian Tuesday

Ismael Martinez was arrested on Tuesday.

A man is in jail after a crash in downtown Buckeye left a pedestrian critically injured, according to the Buckeye Police Department.

Just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a crash "where it was learned a driver in a truck made a turn near 8th Street and Monroe and hit a man walking in a cross walk," police officials stated on Wednesday. "The victim was taken to the hospital with severe injuries. At last check, he is in critical condition but stable."

The pedestrian was in the street and in a marked cross walk, according to the BPD statement. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver was contacted on scene. It is unknown if speed or impairment are factors. Right now 8th Street is closed between Monroe and Jackson with no ETA for reopening.

According to Wednesday's prepared statement, the suspect, a man in his 30s, was contacted by officers on scene. Media reports identified the driver as Ismael Martinez.

He was booked into jail for reckless driving and warrants for prior traffic violations, according to police.

"At this time, it does not appear that speed or impairment were factors in the crash." the statement reads. "The investigation is ongoing."
