Original creations from local artists have started to come in as part of Buckeye’s first Take a Canvas program.
The city passed out 82 canvases in the past few weeks with the intention of celebrating Buckeye and the State of Arizona as part of the AZ America250, the nationwide celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
“We asked artists to create works which celebrate either Arizona and/or America, and we'll be putting up images of the strongest submissions at Air Fair for the public to judge,” said Ilana Lydia Holden, Arts & Culture manager with the City of Buckeye Community Services.
Holden said the call for artwork is an “all-age competition,” with the first round of judging using criteria of use of color, creativity, and the "Wow! Factor."
Four prize-levels include first place and a $250 gift card with publication in the city’s Eye on Buckeye publication; second place, $100; third, $75; and there's a "Rising Star" level with a $50 prize.
The deadline to enter the canvases that were passed out is Friday.
