West-MEC to host first-ever ‘Career Signing Day’ as students commit to jobs before graduation

Students at the Western Maricopa Education Center on Verrado Way will take a major step from classroom to career this week during the school’s inaugural “Career Signing Day,” a first-of-its-kind event celebrating seniors who have already secured employment in high-demand industries.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday morning at the West-MEC START Campus in Glendale, mirrors the excitement of a traditional college athletic signing day. Instead of committing to universities, however, students will sign letters of intent to begin their careers immediately after graduation.

Organizers say the ceremony is designed to highlight a growing trend: students entering the workforce with hands-on training, industry certifications, and job offers already in hand.

Among the students being recognized are Colter Gauzens, who will join Rummel Construction, and Connor Allard, Liam O’Brien, and Guillermo Chavira, all of whom have committed to careers with Kearney Electric.

Each student will be paired with their future employer during the ceremony, signing their letter of intent and receiving company gear in a moment designed to be both celebratory and symbolic. Family members, West-MEC leadership, and governing board members are also expected to attend.

The event coincides with National Skilled Trades Day, underscoring the importance of trade careers as workforce demands continue to rise. West-MEC officials say the majority of participating employers represent skilled trades industries, where demand for trained workers remains strong.

School leaders say Career Signing Day reflects a broader shift in how student success is recognized.

“Just as students are celebrated for college and athletic commitments, this event recognizes those who are career-ready now,” organizers said in a statement.

The ceremony will run from 8 to 9 a.m. West-MEC officials say the event is expected to become an annual tradition as more students pursue direct pathways into the workforce.
