Buckeye’s Community Services Advisory Board approved a mural project Wednesday that will beautify the blank walls of the large trash enclosure at Sundance Park, ADDRESS.
The mural is part of a summer arts program involving high school students from across the West Valley and coordinated through Gallery 37, an award-winning summer youth public art program.
Each year, students meet for five weeks with professional artist Chris Vena, an Arizona-based painter and educator, to design, develop and install a permanent piece of public art for a West Valley city. The project this year is taking place in Buckeye.
Students will earn college credits in partnership with Estrella Mountain Community College and a cash stipend for their work.
Because of the short timeline, members of the Advisory Board approved the concept of the project without seeing a proof.
“This group is exceptional,” said James Davis, who coordinates Gallery 37 through the West Valley Arts Council. “They are all just exceptional artists.”
The artwork is a collaboration of several groups of young artists and will be preproduced digitally on vinyl so that it can be wrapped around the structure.
