This story has been updated with the correct date, which incorrectly stated Sept. 18 as the day of the protest.
Local organizers plan to hold a “No Kings” demonstration this Oct. 18 Buckeye, curiously timed shortly following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a political event.
The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Watson and Yuma roads. Organizers say it is intended as a response to concerns about authoritarian displays and the abuse of political power.
Kirk, known for co-founding Turning Point USA and leading a conservative youth activism movement, was shot and killed on Sept. 10 during a public event at Utah Valley University. Authorities said casings left at the scene contained inscriptions referencing fascism.
Buckeye Police have said they are aware of the planned protest and that officers will monitor the gathering and work with the organizers to ensure safety.
"Just as we did the last demonstration, Buckeye police will be communicating with organizers to help ensure a safe event for all," a spokesperson said.
In past “No Kings” events in Buckeye, turnout has been modest, and demonstrations have remained peaceful, though emotionally charged. Organizers at previous rallies have raised issues including immigration policy, democratic accountability, and concerns over the concentration of political power.
Saturday’s event is expected to echo that tone, though coming after Kirk’s death adds a new layer of tension. Organizers are urging attendees to bring signs, water, sun protection, and to remain nonviolent.
Both nationally and locally, the dialogue around political violence has shifted in recent days. The assassination of Kirk has prompted bipartisan condemnation, renewed debate over security at political events, and scrutiny of the rhetoric in public discourse.
