The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday expanded a sweeping voluntary recall for more than 260,000 cases of shredded cheese, much of which is sold locally.
Great Lakes Cheese Company led the recall after metal fragments were found in a supplier’s raw materials, according to newly released FDA enforcement documents. The recall, first initiated Oct. 3, was expanded yesterday to cover dozens of shredded mozzarella and multi-cheese blends expanded to 31 states, including Arizona.
The recall focuses on low-moisture part-skim mozzarella and blended shredded cheeses in multiple cuts and package sizes. The FDA says these cheeses “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” The affected brands are:
- Always Save
- Borden
- Brookshire’s
- Cache Valley Creamery
- Chestnut Hill
- Coburn Farms
- Food Club
- Food Lion
- Gold Rush Creamery
- Good & Gather (Target)
- Great Lakes Cheese
- Great Value (Walmart)
- Happy Farms (Aldi)
- H-E-B
- Hill Country Fare
- Know & Love
- Laura Lynn
- Lucerne Dairy Farms
- Publix
- Schnuck’s
- Simply Go
- Sprouts Farmers Market
- Stater Bros.
- Sunnyside Farms
The products include classic shredded mozzarella, Italian-style blends, pizza blends, fine-cut varieties, thick-cut varieties and multi-cheese blends. Sell-by dates span from January through March 2026. If you have the affected cheese, you’re asked to discard it or return it to the store you bought it from for a refund.
The recall affects a wide array of grocery stores, including Maricopa’s Sprouts Farmers Market and Walmart, both selling cheese from the Great Lakes Cheese’s manufacturing network. Employees at Sprouts today said they were aware of the recall and weren’t selling any of the affected product. Walmart redirected InMaricopa to its corporate office for comment. No postings were visible in the store when checked today.
A press release from Great Lakes Cheese said it immediately took action and instructed retailers to remove the products from shelves.
“When we were confident all recalled products had been removed from store shelves, we distributed new product that did not have the potential to contain foreign material and was safe,” said the release.
