A major road expansion project designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety along one of the West Valley’s growing corridors has officially begun on Jackrabbit Trail.

The project focuses on the stretch of Jackrabbit Trail between McDowell Road and Thomas Road, where construction is expected to continue through fall 2027. Despite the long-term work, officials said the road will remain open to traffic throughout construction.

Increasing capacity for growth

As development continues to accelerate in the area, the project is designed to accommodate rising traffic volumes while reducing congestion during peak travel times, according to city officials.

Key improvements include widening Jackrabbit Trail to three lanes in each direction, a change expected to significantly reduce bottlenecks and improve overall travel efficiency.

Safety and traffic flow improvements

In addition to road widening, new traffic signals will go up at both McDowell and Thomas roads. The upgraded intersections are intended to enhance safety while improving traffic movement along the corridor, according to the city..

Coordinated improvements

Project planners said the expansion is coordinated alongside another major regional infrastructure effort — the Interstate 10 interchange at Jackrabbit Trail — to ensure a smoother transition once both projects are completed.

Officials said that construction may create temporary inconveniences but emphasized that the long-term benefits will support continued growth and improve travel.

The $19.3 million project will be paid for from the city’s general fund and is part of the 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program.
