Liberty ESD places interim superintendent on paid leave after split vote

[Liberty Elementary School District]

The Liberty Elementary School District governing board voted 3-2 Tuesday night to place Interim Superintendent Trevor McDonald on paid administrative leave following a 90-minute executive session.

Board members Kristopher Kenyon, Bryan Cirrincione and Michael Todd supported the motion, while Kellie Zimmerman and Sarah Schmidt opposed it, according to district records. The motion was introduced by Kenyon and seconded by Cirrincione.

The decision was made during a special board meeting, where tensions among members surfaced.

In a letter to district families today, board president Michael Todd said the action was a personnel matter and offered no additional details.

“I wanted to take a moment to inform our staff and community that the Governing Board took action to place Interim Superintendent on Administrative Leave,” Todd wrote. “This is a personnel matter, so therefore I am not able to provide any further details.”

The governing board voted unanimously in July to hire McDonald as its interim superintendent for the 2025-26 school year.

Neither the board nor district officials immediately provided details on the reasons behind McDonald’s placement on leave.

The Liberty district serves portions of Buckeye and Goodyear in the West Valley.
