The City of Buckeye made a significant move Tuesday for future development north of Interstate 10 along Jackrabbit Trail.

Members of the City Council granted approval to the city manager’s office to move forward with the nearly $20 million improvement to Jackrabbit Trail between McDowell Road and Thomas Road “and expand the corridor to its ultimate arterial cross-section.”

Improvements would include road widening, installation of two traffic signals, and drainage improvements.

Before any work to the section of Jackrabbit Trail moves forward the city must complete “final right-of-way acquisition” and “dry utility relocations,” according to the city documents obtained by InBuckeye. Both are in their final stages, documents state.

Related projects in the same area include widening Jackrabbit Trail all the way north Indian School Road, the Jackrabbit Trail/Indian School Road Fiber and Conduit installation, and the recently completed improvement on McDowell Road from Jackrabbit to Tuthill Wash.

The design phase of the McDowell to Thomas project is complete, but the completion of the project isn’t expected until late this year or mid-2027, according to Allyson Camillucci, the city’s project manager.

Once finished, drivers will enjoy additional lanes, both north and south, intersection improvements with traffic lights and landscaping.

These projects are all part of the city's Fiscal Year 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Plan, which has an approved budget of about  $615 million and includes 115 projects including the following departments and programs:

  • Airport
  • Community Services
  • Development Services
  • Fire
  • Information Technology
  • Municipal Court
  • Police
  • Public Works
  • Transportation
  • Wastewater
  • Water Resources

In 2026 alone, the city plans to spend about $146 million on 55 projects.
