Buckeye City Council members approved a rezone request that will allow a new daycare center at 501 E Mahoney Street on the southeast corner of South 5th Street and East Mahoney Avenue.

Amber Newbill, on behalf of Rigoberto Mendez, requested the zone change from Planned Residential to Downtown Residential for about 0.75 acres on the site where an existing building will be remodeled.

The building, previously used as a church, is in a residential area and will have a playground attached with no playground structures.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting Councilman Craig Heustis expressed some concern that the planned playground area was going to replace a former garden at the church, although Newbill said the area in question was going to be covered with artificial grass and some native plants.

Newbill said the center would be licensed for up to 65 children.
