The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued an ozone high pollution advisory for Friday for Buckeye and the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, warning that unhealthy air conditions could pose health risks to residents.
According to the advisory, forecast weather conditions combined with existing ozone levels are expected to create elevated concentrations of ground-level ozone throughout the region. The alert was relayed Thursday morning by the National Weather Service.
Officials said ozone pollution can cause breathing difficulties, particularly for children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic lung disease. Health experts recommend reducing strenuous outdoor activity during periods of poor air quality.
Residents are also being encouraged to help reduce emissions by carpooling, telecommuting or using public transportation when possible. The advisory further recommends limiting the use of gasoline-powered equipment, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
The advisory comes as warmer temperatures and stagnant atmospheric conditions continue to contribute to worsening air quality across the Valley.
Additional information and air quality forecasts are available through the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
