Brandon Compton, a Buckeye Union High School graduate and standout at Arizona State University, was selected in the second round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Miami Marlins, taken 46th overall.
The 20-year-old left-handed hitter, a former two-way player with the Sun Devils, has quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top power bats, according to scouting reports. Compton, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023, chose to focus exclusively on hitting during his redshirt sophomore season, which apparently paid dividends. He was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2024 after slashing .354/.427/.661 with 14 home runs and 51 RBIs.
At the MLB Draft Combine this spring, Compton turned heads by posting one of the top three recorded exit velocities since 2021, reaching a max of 116.9 mph. His summer ball performance only solidified his draft stock: he hit .320 in the Northwoods League and .331 in the Cape Cod League, earning all-star honors.
In 2025, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound slugger continued to impress with a .271/.379/.486 line, adding nine homers and 54 RBIs to his resume. He profiles as a high-upside outfield bat or designated hitter, though scouts say he’ll need to refine his strike-zone discipline and defensive consistency, according to news scouting reports.
Buckeye Star’s high school legacy
Compton, a BUHS Class of 2022 graduate, leaves behind an impressive high school legacy that laid the groundwork for his rise to the pros, according to a spokesperson at BUHSD.
During his time at Buckeye Union High School District, he earned multiple top honors, including 2021–22 4A All-Conference First Team, AZBCA 4A All-State Second Team, and 4A Southwest Region Offensive Player of the Year. As a junior in 2020–21, he was named 4A Southwest Region Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, and received All-State First Team recognition as both a pitcher and position player.
"Among the awards and accolades, Brandon was an influential member of our program. During the 2020-21 season, he helped lead BUHS to our first region championship since the 2005-06 season and first playoff appearance since the 2017-18 season," the coach said. "In addition to athletics, he was also an honor student."
