Buckeye traffic stop leads to arrest of ‘sovereign citizen’

A Facebook post from the Arizona Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol has drawn attention to a Buckeye traffic stop that led to a driver's arrest for multiple violations.

In the post, AZDPS said the incident happened on Wednesday, when a state trooper stopped a vehicle displaying a clearly fictitious license plate reading “DOT EXEMPT.” The plate did not list a state name, which officers said made it immediately suspicious.

According to the Facebook post, the trooper then learned that the driver’s Arizona license was suspended. A records check also showed she had an active misdemeanor warrant through the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

AZDPS stated the driver was taken into custody and booked on the warrant and on two additional misdemeanor charges.

The agency added in its Facebook post that, based on the driver’s statements and documents found inside the vehicle, she appeared to identify as a “sovereign citizen” and claimed she was “traveling,” not driving.

In its message, Highway Patrol stressed that anyone using city, state or federal roads must follow the law, including requirements to have a valid license and a properly registered vehicle.

No further details were released in the post.
