The gravesite of fallen Buckeye Police Officer Rolando Tirado was honored Saturday by the Buckeye Police Honor Guard, according to a post on social media.
Tirado was joined by law enforcement members across the valley as part of a holiday wreath laying event .
Saturday's ceremony was organized by Fallen Heroes Wreath Program Arizona, which ensures residents "never forget the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women who died in the line of duty.
Accordig to the City of Buckeye, Tirado was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle in a parking lot on South 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road in Phoenix.
"Tirado and another officer, Chris Paz, were working an off-duty security detail at a business in the city of Phoenix when they stopped an erratic driver in the business parking lot at approximately 1:15 a.m.," a statement from the City of Buckeye reads. "As Officer Tirado was talking to the driver outside the vehicle, the front-seat passenger exited the vehicle, walked around the back of the car and shot Officer Tirado from behind.
"The gunman then engaged in a gunfight with the second officer, during which the gunman was shot and killed. The second officer, also from the Buckeye Police Department, was transported to a local hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds to his shoulder, neck and lower body. Officer Tirado succumbed to his wounds and died at the scene.
"The driver of the vehicle was critically wounded during the gunfight, and a third occupant fled the scene but was captured two days later by the Phoenix Police Department.
A Veteran Officer
"Officer Tirado was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served four years in law enforcement with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Surprise Police Department before coming to work for the Buckeye Police Department. Officer Tirado served with the Buckeye Police Department for seven years and was assigned to Youngker High School as a School Resource Officer. He also worked on the SWAT Team as a Crisis Negotiator. Officer Tirado was a well-respected, dedicated officer and is deeply missed.
"He is survived by his wife and two children.
