Tohono O’odham Nation opens Desert Diamond Casino, boosting Buckeye’s economy

Desert Diamond Casino officially opened Wednesday Dec. 18, bringing excitement and economic potential to Buckeye.

Operated by the Tohono O’odham Nation, the casino features more than 1,000 slot machines, table games, and a sportsbook. Located just off Interstate 10, it is poised to become a major attraction in the West Valley, drawing visitors from across Arizona and beyond.

The casino is expected to create hundreds of local jobs and inject millions into Buckeye’s economy. City leaders and businesses anticipate increased tourism and tax revenue, as well as future developments such as hotels, restaurants, and retail.

For residents, the opening marks a milestone in Buckeye’s transformation into a regional hub for recreation and business. The casino complements the city’s rapid growth and ongoing efforts to attract new residents and investment.

Desert Diamond Casino is the latest gaming facility operated by the Tohono O’odham Nation, opening after years of planning and development. As part of Arizona’s tribal gaming agreements, the project was designed to expand economic opportunities for the Nation while serving the growing West Valley region. Its location near I-10 was chosen for accessibility and its ability to attract a wide range of visitors.

Development followed lengthy negotiations between the Tohono O’odham Nation, the state, and local governments to ensure compliance with Arizona’s gaming compact, which was expanded in 2021. The process included securing approvals, addressing community concerns, and managing construction logistics. With the opening, the casino is expected to bring significant economic benefits to Buckeye, including jobs and increased tourism.
