Home Depot opened Wednesday to great fanfare that included company officials and city leaders, as well has a crowd of shoppers.
City officials celebrated the opening of the new store in the Buckeye Commons Shopping Center – near Costco.
With the opening, the City of Buckeye secured the long-awaited retailer, closing a 20-year gap that began when the original construction was abandoned during the Great Recession that began in 2007.
Mayor Eric Orsborn said the store's arrival is more than a routine commercial opening, instead it’s a signal, he said.
The fact that a project stalled for two decades is now crossing the finish line reflects a measurable shift in investor confidence in Buckeye as a viable growth market.
The new location brings 147 employees, 120 of whom are net-new hires drawn directly from the local community.
Civic leadership said the ribbon cutting represents vindication of a long-standing argument: that the city's residential growth trajectory would eventually compel major retailers to follow.
“We are no longer a community that has to leave town to meet its basic needs,” Orsborn said.
