Several hundred chicken finger fans turned out Monday for a chance at a year's supply of Raising Cane's chicken during the company's grand opening event on North Verrado Way.
A threatened protest by PETA barely materialized, with two sign holders standing across the parking lot from festivities.

“I’m not letting anything ruin this day,” said Sam McQuade, restaurant leader. Her staff of 110 employees were on hand for the celebration, which also included a check-passing for Verrado High School.
The school’ Pom Squad and Cheer Squad provided a backdrop to the event. The grand opening also brought out a couple of Arizona Cardinal Football cheerleaders who worked the crowd as well, signing autographs and passing out promotional material.
The line of customers began forming on Sunday afternoon with several dozen hardcore Raising Cane’s fans sleeping overnight in cots and in tents.
The restaurant will be operated as a corporate-owned store, one of more than 30 stores throughout the Phoenix metro area – five of which are in the West Valley.
