If you've ever found yourself stopped at a railroad crossing watching freight cars rumble past, you've probably never imagined one of those railcars carrying a single piece of equipment weighing a half million pounds.
Yet that's exactly what's happening in Buckeye.
Several times this year, a massive transformer weighing about 500,000 pounds has arrived by rail before beginning the final leg of its journey to the Atlas Solar Project west of Buckeye in La Paz County.

"This is the third of six transformers we're delivering to the project," said Damien Vega of Phoenix-based Southwest Industrial Rigging, the company handling the transport.
Engineering on display
Before the transformer can even begin its highway journey, crews must first remove it from the railcar using a process known as the jack-and-slide method.
Hydraulic jacks slowly lift the enormous transformer while crews carefully slide it onto support systems, creating enough room to assemble an enormous transport trailer beneath it.
The trailer itself is an engineering marvel.
Known as a dual-lane suspension beam trailer, it is designed to carry more than 600,000 pounds — far more than the weight of the transformer itself. Once the trailer is assembled and positioned, the transformer is lowered into place and secured for transport.
From there, the company works with the Arizona Department of Public Safety to obtain permits and coordinate the move.
Three trucks, one load
Moving half a million pounds isn't as simple as hitching up a semi-truck.
The convoy uses three big rigs working together — one pulling from the front and two pushing from behind, according to Vega.
Drivers remain in constant radio communication so every acceleration, brake application and steering correction happens in unison.
“The transport convoy will use three semi-trucks—one pull truck and two push trucks—linked and synchronized via radio communication to provide combined power,” Vega said.
The synchronized effort allows the convoy to move one of the heaviest highway loads seen on Arizona roads.
A global journey to Buckeye
The transformer's trip began thousands of miles away.
Manufactured in the Netherlands by Royal SMIT Transformers, it was shipped by sea to the United States before traveling by rail from Houston to Buckeye.
Buckeye's rail siding serves as the closest practical unloading point for the Atlas Solar Project, Vega said, making the city an important logistical hub for the renewable energy development.
“[Buckeye] is the nearest rail siding that is basically accessible for us to do exactly that, and there's no siding closer to the job site,” Vega said.
The final steps
The work doesn't end when the convoy reaches the solar project.
Once on site, crews dismantle the oversized highway trailer and transfer the transformer onto a smaller transport system capable of navigating the construction site, according to Vega.
Using the jack-and-slide method once again, the transformer is carefully positioned onto its permanent concrete foundation.
The process is slow, deliberate and measured in inches rather than miles.
Heavy lifting becomes more common
Although transporting equipment weighing hundreds of thousands of pounds might seem extraordinary, Vega said these projects are becoming increasingly common as Arizona continues investing in electrical infrastructure and renewable energy.
Southwest Industrial Rigging specializes in these oversized moves throughout the Southwest and recently transported an even larger 600,000-pound transformer for Salt River Project in Pinal County and near Coolidge.
For most drivers, seeing one of these convoys rolling down an Arizona highway may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
For the crews making it happen, it's another day of carefully choreographed heavy lifting — one that showcases the expertise, precision and planning required to keep Arizona's growing energy network moving forward.
“Yeah, we've done it multiple times,” Vega said.
As Buckeye continues to attract major industrial and energy projects, scenes like this are becoming another sign of the city's expanding role as a gateway for large-scale infrastructure across the West.
