All are welcome at Cotton Blessings, a downtown creative space like no other

Doing it yourself is only good when you know what you’re doing. Walkthrough videos churned out by the likes of 5-Minute Crafts leave a lot to be desired, leaving you asking, “When did my DIY become DiWhy?”

Terra Duke’s Cotton Blessings aims to help people change that perception with fun and thoughtful projects at her unique, creative space, all organized with precise and thoughtful structure.
“I grew up in the corner of a cotton field,” said Duke, née Youngker. “That’s where the name came from, because cotton has always blessed us.”

Nestled in the heart of historic Buckeye, the boutique workshop is a nod to Buckeye’s charming country downtown. The building bears a green color like the cotton plants she grew up among in Buckeye, but the crops inside are waiting for you to harvest.

Terra’s space offers various no-appointment drop-in projects. The space also supports services such as custom work, seasonal items and group parties.

Duke exudes patience and kindness to inspire you or a group of six or more to create while building lasting friendships.

Even the paint is forgiving. Cotton Blessings uses Dixie Belle to add a splash of color.

“It’s a chalk mineral paint. We use it in projects,” she said. “It’s a pretty versatile paint. You can wipe it on, you can brush it on, you can spray it on. People use it for refinishing furniture, but we also use it in the projects, too.”

Prices range from $18 to $75 for the projects, meaning patrons of any budget can walk out happy. Duke also holds monthly workshops for regular customers.

She has catered to a diverse clientele since opening mid-2023, including retirees, young families and a low-key bachelorette party. Duke also hosts community events like painting bowls for a food bank.

In that program, you donate to All Faith Community Services and create a commemorative bowl for your donation.

“You paint the bowl and are provided all the materials for you to make the bowl,” Duke said. “You leave the bowl. I take it to another nonprofit. They fire it, kiln it, go pick it up and you get it. You get to take a bowl home, and the food bank gets a monetary donation.”

Duke said the bowls have been made with many visions in mind.

“It’s an ice cream bowl, cereal bowl … some spring break girls from Goodyear came in wanting to make a ramen bowl,” she said.

For family visits, she said it’s not uncommon for parents to come down and create something they keep forever with their kids. Ornaments are popular at Christmastime.

The business is part of the Buckeye Main Street Coalition, which hosted a mixer March 27 at the Cotton Blessings storefront, 423 E. Monroe Ave.

With any hope, Terra Duke and her husband Matt will be a continued blessing to downtown Buckeye for years to come.
