Gas leak ends school day at Buckeye Union High

A gas leak at Buckeye Union High School led to an early dismissal and evacuation on Friday.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. when reports of a strong gas odor were made from two buildings on the campus. Emergency responders quickly arrived and confirmed the presence of gas using their detection equipment.

As a precaution, students and staff were evacuated to ensure their safety. Buckeye Fire Department Assistant Chief Rayne Gray confirmed that classes were canceled for the rest of the day. The school is coordinating with parents to ensure that students are transported home safely.

The Dr. Saide Rec Center has been made available as a temporary shelter.

Gray explained that the leak was traced to a gas appliance in a two-story building on the campus. Southwest Gas is currently addressing the issue to secure the appliance and make the building safe for re-entry.
