A routine traffic stop turned into a felony arrest Saturday night after a driver sped away from police, leaving his driver’s license behind and nearly striking an officer, police said in a statement.
Around 10 p.m. on Jan. 11, a Buckeye police officer conducting traffic enforcement in the Verrado community clocked a Dodge Charger traveling 75 mph in a 40 mph zone on Verrado Way near Western Drive. The officer pulled the car over and informed the driver, 19-year-old Seth Rabago, that he was being stopped for criminal speeding.
Rabago handed over his driver’s license, and the officer returned to their patrol vehicle. While a second officer was speaking with Rabago, who remained seated in the Charger, he suddenly sped off, narrowly missing the officer.
Officers began searching for the vehicle, including visiting the address listed on Rabago’s license. During the search, a family member contacted police to report that Rabago wanted to surrender. He was later arrested and booked into jail on charges of speeding, unlawful flight, and aggravated assault.
Court records show that Rabago was previously cited in March 2024 for “knowingly displaying a fictitious plate.” However, that charge was dismissed in April, at the request of the prosecutor.
The Buckeye Police Department has been conducting enhanced traffic enforcement in the Verrado area in response to community concerns. Officers are targeting violations such as speeding, failing to stop at stop signs, and loud exhaust.
